4 Ukrainian universities among the best in the World

QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global analytical agency in the field of higher education and compiler of the most popular ranking of the best universities in the world, published rankings for the best universities in the world in 2021 – QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, which included 1452 universities, including four universities in Ukraine.

Last year, the number of rankings by specialties increased from 48 to 51, and the rankings of the best universities in engineering specialties in the fields of oil and gas, geology and geophysics were added.

This year, the total number of universities in some rankings by specialty has been increased, for example, in each of the following rankings by majors – business and management, computer science and information systems, hospitality and leisure management, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and pharmacology – the number of universities increased by 50.

The number of Ukrainian higher education institutions in the rankings by specialties in 2021 compared to the previous year increased from two to four. This year, Ukrainian universities received 12 positions in one industry ranking and seven rankings by specialty, last year they received seven positions in one industry ranking and six rankings by specialty.

The rankings of the best universities in 2021 according to the field of knowledge/specialty include the following Ukrainian universities:

2. VN Karazin Kharkiv National University

3. Lviv Polytechnic National University

  • Engineering specialties in the field of oil and gas 101-150
  • Computer Science and Information Systems 551-600

4. National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after Igor Sikorsky”

  • Computer Science and Information Systems 501-550

Among Ukrainian universities, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv participates in the largest number of rankings by specialties (in one branch rating and six rankings by specialties), and Lviv Polytechnic National University occupies the highest position among Ukrainian universities – 101-150 in the ranking of the best universities from engineering specialties in the field of oil and gas.

For the first time, Kharkiv National University named after VN Karazin and Lviv Polytechnic National University were included in the rankings of the best universities.

Ben Sauter, director of the QS analytical department, comments: “This year, the number of Ukrainian universities in the rankings by specialty has doubled: from two to four. It is important to note their participation in the rankings of highly competitive specialties, namely: computer science and information systems, physics and astronomy, as well as engineering specialties in the field of oil and gas. “

Methodology

QS uses four indicators to compile rankings by specialty:

• Academic reputation: a qualitative indicator calculated on the basis of a survey of more than 102,000 scientists, teachers and heads of universities;

• Reputation among employers: a qualitative indicator calculated based on the results of a survey of more than 52,000 representatives of employer companies;

• Number of citations per publication: a quantitative indicator of scientific performance, which measures the average number of citations per publication according to the international scientometric platform Scopus of Elsevier;

• Hirsch Organizational Index: A quantitative indicator that reflects the scientific performance and impact of research, according to Elsevier’s international scientometric platform Scopus.
